It’s some time since J Sainsbury inhabited either Stamford Street, or the undisputed number one spot, and in that time we have seen massive change in both the power of the retailer and the passivity of the consumer.

    Among the explanations for the Tesco take-over and Sainsbury’s slipping is the suggestion that one company had its eye firmly fixed on the shopper and what her priorities were, what she wanted and what her motivation for wanting it was, and the other company, er, didn’t.

    The power transfer took place at a time of opportunity when the shopper expected more choice, indulged in more travel and so responded to things foreign (including the now seemingly forgotten concept of service), expected to have her wishes satisfied, and was thrilled to bits when they were anticipated.

    Not dissimilar to today, one might suggest. But maybe it’s more different than we are prepared to admit. Today’s shopper certainly has high expectations, demands even, and is more capable of voting with her feet than ever before, in theory – in theory because she will only vote this way if it is geographically practical. Overall, she is probably quite passive and is more likely to register her upset by reducing her spend on certain items.

    She also has a firmly held belief that she is entitled to access almost anything at anytime as part of her lifestyle demands, and, so far as supermarkets are concerned, at competitive prices. Does she want cheap or does she want value? The key is how she sees the difference and this, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs aside, changes according to product category.

    Price or perception?

    When she thinks flowers there is a point of view that says, just like our friends who used to be in Stamford Street, the industry may be a trifle slow to wake up to her changing motivation and to anticipate changes in her desires.

    In the last decade the fresh flower market has gone stratospheric. Sales are predicted to exceed ?1.8bn this year, distribution is virtually 100%, the supermarket sector has taken nearly 70% share of value, and year-on-year category growth has been (mostly) more than acceptable. Add in industry wisdom that there is still a long way to go before we reach the holy grail of 100% of supermarket customers buying even once a year and the future should look very rosy.

    If there is a different ‘driver’ between brand and fresh then this illustrates it. Ordinary brand has more difficulty in commanding a (semi) premium price point than fresh. Fresh, by definition, is limited life and so to ensure repeat purchase the consumer needs reassurance, value and an essence of ‘quality’ to buy into it. No accident then that so many major players promote fresh as their main marketing message. And, would you really want to buy ‘cheap’ meat anyway?

    Price and perceived value are keys to engaging the customer even though price alone can be crucial to bringing new customers into the market. There is no disputing percentage extra offers generate success, but they tend to be mostly enjoyed with volume varieties such as tulips and chrysanthemums. Alone, they are not about expanding the market on a profitable long term basis.

    For regular buyers, the extra value message may well appeal purely on their value, but will it drive up their spend, intrigue them or challenge them? Will it compensate for what they might see as the ‘sameness’ of the offer?

    To continue to grow the market we must, as in all markets, refresh it and re-present it, so customers don’t go stale on us. The latest Flower Council of Holland research shows a growing band of customers who, having dipped their toe into the flower

    Worm Fishing

    School’s cell phone ban is right move

    Today, Fayetteville Christian School takes a big step toward curbing cell phone abuse among students.

    Students win, although they probably don’t feel that way.

    Going forward, teachers and staff will confiscate cell phones they find on students and hold the devices until the end of the school day.

    I hope more schools follow Fayetteville Christian’s lead.

    School Headmaster Tammi Peters says students were caught twice this year texting test answers.

    But even outside of cheating, the new policy is a common sense way of stopping students from texting during class and ignoring their lessons. Some FCS children claim that they will be bored or will fall asleep if they are separated from their phones.

    To me, that’s a risk well worth taking. What is more likely is that they will pay better attention in class.

    Some people will no doubt claim that children need their phones in case of emergency.

    Sorry, no sale.

    First, recall that the United States experienced hundreds of years of private and public education before the cell phone’s invention. This may seem hard to believe, but I’m not foolin’ — check Wikipedia.

    In all that time, there must have been, conservatively, several dozen emergencies. Somehow, parents were still able to reach their children.

    Secondly, school is arguably one of the easiest places to reach your child, provided she’s not playing hooky. Simply call the front desk and let the magic happen.

    All that said, I’d be the first to admit the FCS policy at first blush comes off as a mite heavy-handed.

    But the staff should not be blamed. For blame, parents need only check a mirror.

    Parents are the first teachers. Children learn boundaries on using cell phones from their parents.

    Parents pay the bills, including the cell phone bills. They set the rules.

    Back in my day, if I had been caught texting in class, my parents’ punishment would have been swift. This is assuming I’d have been allowed a phone in the first place.

    “I’ve told my mom to take my texting away,” FCS sophomore Wally Trevino told a reporter. “It only gets me into trouble.”

    Now, Wally was probably joking, at least some. But there’s a kernel of truth in his words that apply to many of his peers.

    Peters’ action comes when society seems to be fighting back against cell phone abuse. I wrote on Sunday about local movie theaters’ cracking down on phones. State legislators are considering at least two bills that target talking and texting while driving.

    I wish that we could all show a modicum of restraint with our cell phones, but as with alcohol, some people cannot.

    I applaud the headmaster and her staff for standing in the gap where more parents should be.

    Treat yourself to breakfast at one of Paris' oldest tea salons. Ladurée was founded as a family business in 1862 and now appears in luxurious locales in London, Monaco, Switzerland and Japan. The original, Ladurée Royale on Rue Royale, doesn't open until 8:30am (and later on Sundays), so for early morning pastries drop into the Champs-Elysees store which opens at 7:30am every day.

    The queues at Paris' most famous art gallery, the Louvre, are notorious so impatient visitors are advised to go to the Musée de l'Orangerie, set in the historic Jardin des Tuileries. You won't see the Mona Lisa, but the gallery does boast a collection of Claude Monet's Water Lilies. The queues are shorter the earlier you go and to really beat the crowds pre-book your time slot online.

    Head north to have your own images sketched by street artists in Montmartre, a former stomping ground for famous names including Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.

    Wander further on to Rue de Sèvres where you can batter your credit card with some upmarket shopping at Le Bon Marché and La Grand Epicerie.

    Obama’s half-brother arrested on charge of marijuana possession

    NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) — George Obama, the half-brother of U.S. President Barack Obama, has been arrested by Kenyan police on a charge of possession of marijuana, police said Saturday.

    nspector Augustine Mutembei, the officer in charge, said Obama was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, known in Kenya as Bhang, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Mutembei said.

    He is being held at Huruma police post in the capital of Nairobi.

    Speaking from behind bars, Obama denied the allegations.

    “They took me from my home,” he said, “I don't know why they are charging me.”

    George Obama and the president barely know each other, though they have met. George Obama was one of the president's few close relatives who did not go to the inauguration in Washington last week.

    In his memoir, “Dreams from My Father,” Barack Obama describes meeting George as a “painful affair.” Barack Obama's trip to Kenya meant meeting family he had never known.

    CNN tracked down George Obama in August and found him at a small house in Huruma, a Nairobi slum, where he lives with his mother's extended family. His birth certificate shows that he is Barack Obama's half-brother.

    The two men share a Kenyan father. In the memoir, Barack Obama struggles to reconcile with his father after he left him and his mother when he was just a child.

    Barack Obama Sr. died in a car accident when George was just 6 months old. Like his half-brother, George hardly knew his father.

    George was his father's last child and had not been aware of his famous half-brother growing up.

    Unlike his grandmother in Kogelo, in western Kenya, George Obama had received little attention from the media until reports about him surfaced in August.

    The reports sprung from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama lived in a shack and was “earning less than a dollar a day.” Those reports left George Obama angry.

    “I was brought up well. I live well even now,” he said. “The magazines, they have exaggerated everything.

    “I think I kind of like it here. There are some challenges, but maybe it is just like where you come from, there are the same challenges,” Obama said.

    Obama, who is in his mid-20s, said at the time that he was learning to become a mechanic and was active in youth groups in Huruma. He said he tried to help the community as much as he can.

    A little guy with a big heart, Kyle made the most of a life cut short

    Eight-year-old boys should never die. They should be forever running, chasing, playing, laughing.

    They should be doing everything Kyle Roger did every day of his life, until the cancer in his brain finally overcame the spirit that pushed him to the very end Saturday morning.

    Two years ago, I went to write a story on a little 6-year-old from Bellingham who wanted to meet Washington quarterback Jake Locker. At the time, Locker had yet to play a college game, but he was happy to accommodate a Huskies family from his hometown.

    Turns out, that was a day to treasure. Locker was tremendous, a gentle soul willing to run around the turf at Husky Stadium playing catch, allowing Kyle to chase and tackle him, walking out of the tunnel hand-in-hand with Kyle and his brother, Nicolas, just like a pregame ritual, eventually finding out where Kyle sat in the stands on Saturdays and promising to point to his new friend the first time he scored a touchdown in a real game.

    Locker was pure gold. But Kyle? This kid was the real star.

    You'd never have known such a bright little boy was sick, that an insidious, inoperable cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma was already weaving its way into his brainstem.

    Kyle Roger had something special. An unpretentious spirit. A contagious enthusiasm. A natural ease uncommon for a child his age, or for most people, come to think of it.

    This was a youngster who months later, at another visit to a UW practice, walked up to the intimidating Tyrone Willingham, stuck his hand out to introduce himself and then asked if it was OK if he could play with his quarterback.

    That's just the way he was. Happy to see you. Happy to be alive. And it was a spirit that touched everyone who met him.

    “Whether he knew it or not, he was somebody I looked up to,” Locker said Sunday, a day after learning of his young friend's death. “He was only 6 or 7 years old, but just how he went about living his life and how he treated people, he had a huge impact on me. He was somebody I really admired and respected.

    “It doesn't seem fair that a kid like him with such a great attitude and with so much life ahead should be cut short like that. It's hard to wrap your head around why stuff like that happens.”

    Locker formed a bond with Kyle from that first meeting and kept in touch. The two got together when the family came to Seattle for medical treatments. Locker played video games with the youngster, went to lunch, hung out whenever possible.

    Six months after their initial meeting, Locker lived up to his promise, pointing up at Kyle after scoring his first Husky Stadium touchdown on a run against Boise State. And for more than a year, things seemed to be going amazingly well for the little fellow with the big heart.

    His mom, Christin Willhite Roger, had one goal. She wanted her son to experience all of life he could in whatever time he had.

    One of the first things was meeting Locker. But it didn't end there. The family took Kyle to Disneyland and Hawaii. Went skiing, rode horses, swam with dolphins. Became Lucky Dawg for a day at a Huskies game, going out to midfield for the coin toss with the team captains.

    In between school and vacations came constant trips for radiation and chemotherapy and MRIs of the brain to measure the disease's progress, the kind of reality checks that stuck in the minds of everyone watching this family's delicate journey.

    After almost two years, Kyle's body could no longer take the endless treatments and his “brain bump” as he called it, began returning at a rapid rate.

    Unchecked, cancer can be quick and cruel. This past Christmas break, Kyle walked away from his elementary school in Bellingham on his own power. A few days later, he was in a wheelchair. He started losing his hearing, his sight, his muscle control.

    Locker visited the family home over the holidays.

    “Physically it was a lot worse,” Locker said. “You could tell things were wrong. But his attitude never changed. He always believed he was going to get through it and it was going to go away.

    “That's one of the things that's changed how I look at life. He was so positive about everything, even facing the odds he did. Looking at that, it's unbelievable how people complain about the things they do.”

    Firefighters built a wheelchair ramp at the house. Neighbors helped light up the house like Clark Griswold in the movie “Christmas Vacation,” wanting Kyle to feel the love he deserved.

    Just 10 days ago, the Squalicum High School basketball team invited him to be honorary captain for a game, taking him in the locker room, helping him shoot baskets from on top of shoulders, high-fiving the youngster who'd once excelled on his own at soccer and skiing but now could no longer walk or talk.

    Kyle and his family fought on. They communicated by writing on a white board. They kept spirits up by playing the board games he loved. They continued to treasure every moment, every hug, every mind-numbing challenge until the battle ended Saturday morning with his family at his side less than three weeks after his 8th birthday.

    It's hard to imagine the pain of losing a child. Nobody should go through that struggle. None of us can understand why a little boy must pay that price.

    But having met Kyle, having kept in touch with his family and followed their fight, it's possible to see how one little man can touch a tremendous number of lives.

    When Christin Roger told a co-worker a few months ago how much her son loved getting Christmas cards, the tale made its way to a reporter from the Bellingham Herald, who wrote a story that wound up getting passed on to several restaurant chains.

    Before long, Kyle was flooded with thousands of cards from across the country, including one from the president of the United States. It's impossible not to root for a youngster fighting for his life, whether you're Jake Locker or George Bush.

    And while thousands of children deal every day with equally difficult circumstances, no one should begrudge the attention Kyle received. His family succeeded in filling his short life with every possible highlight in their quest to make the best of the worst possible circumstance.

    And in return, this bright little boy managed to reach so many people who slowed their own worlds long enough to see and remember what really matters.

    “He thought he was getting a chance of a lifetime to run around Husky Stadium and hang out with me,” Locker remembered of his first meeting. “But by the end of that day, I knew I was the lucky one.”

    To those who met him, Kyle Roger was a shining star. Perhaps now more than ever.

    Bugatti Veyron production run nearly sold out?

    When Bugatti started production of the Veyron back in 2005, it was supposed to build 300 examples. For a long time, that total seemed pretty ambitious considering the seven-figure price tag on the most super of contemporary supercars, but according to Molsheim, all but 50 have been built and sold. Add to that another 150 examples of the Grand Sport roadster version and you've got 450. Whether special editions like the Pur Sang, Sang Noir and Hermes are counted as part of the original production figures or considered supplemental specials is insignificant, considering that only a handful of each are to be built.

    The one wrinkle that has us wondering about all of these million-dollar supercars is that it was only last March when it was announced that Bugatti had sold 220 cars (of which only 132 had been built). Given how long it took them to get to 220, that seems like one heck of an order ramp-up, particularly given the state of the global economy.

    The bottom line is that if you've been dragging your feet over whether to spend that extra million on a Bugatti or not, better make your mind up fast. Like, Veyron fast.

    8 Ways to Green Your Winter Travel

    Regardless of economic conditions, travel during November and December increases, often up to 23 percent during the Christmas and New Year’s breaks. Whether you’re visiting friends and family by plane, train or automobile, here’s eight ways to travel green this holiday season:

    1. Ride the Rails . . . and Bus Routes

    Wondering what’s the greenest form of travel? Actually, traveling by bus or train consumes the least amount of carbon per passenger. In the winter, travel by other means is subject to road closures and weather delays. Plus, trains and buses will usually drop you downtown for easier access to the city you’re visiting.

    2. Enjoy Paperless Travel

    No matter how you decide to travel, there is potential for lots of paper use. You’ve got tickets and boarding passes, baggage claim receipts and even directions to your lodging. But in this technological age, is all this paper necessary?

    • Wait to print boarding passes at the airport, where less paper is used (and refuse the “ticket jacket” if offered).
    • Enter important addresses into a portable GPS unit to take on your travel, so you won’t need to print directions.
    • Ask if travel receipts can be emailed to you instead of printed (except luggage, of course).

    3. Prepare Your Car

    If you’re one of the 91 percent of people who opt for the holiday road trip, pre-trip car maintenance can optimize your gas mileage. This includes checking your motor oil and tire pressure, as well as removing unnecessary baggage that will weigh down your car. A 15-minute car preparation can help prevent a two-hour car breakdown in cold weather and more money spent on gas.

    4. Reduce Airplane Waste

    Think about how much waste you go through on an average flight. There’s peanut and food wrappers, aluminum soda and beer cans, disposable headphones, newspapers and magazines and the aforementioned paper travel documents. Other than the headphones and wrappers, it can all be recycled, and chances are your airport has recycling bins.

    Keep this in mind before the flight attendant comes around asking for your trash. You can also bring your own headphones and packed lunch, or tuck your newspaper into the seat in front of you for the next passenger to read.

    5. Monitor the Thermostat

    News flash: winter weather is cold! Since you’re not footing the energy bill on vacation, it’s tempting to turn up the heat at a hotel or a friend’s house (which your buddy probably won’t appreciate). But over a year, two degrees of temperature increase equals 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Consider a reasonable room temperature and request an extra blanket for your bed if you need it.

    6. Recycle in Your Hotel

    You would think that spending $3.00 for a soda at the hotel mini-bar would entitle you to a recycling bin for the can or bottle. Since this is unlikely, bring along a separate bag for recyclables (paper, metal, plastic) that you’re bound to use in the hotel room. Then use Earth911 to find nearby recycling locations on-the-go, or ask the hotel to recycle them for you when you check out.

    7. Refill Travel Containers

    Security measures and space requirements may have you traveling with compact containers for shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries. Instead of continually buying new travel sizes at the store, refill the same compacts from a larger container prior to travel. For most liquids this can be accomplished with a funnel, and you’ll also save money by buying larger sizes.

    8. Shop and Ship Online

    You’re likely exchanging gifts at your holiday destination, so travel raises the important issue of how the gifts will arrive. Packing them in the car will reduce your gas mileage, and packing them in your checked luggage reduces space for clothes. Plus, if you use an extra bag, that will probably cost extra with your airline. If you decide to shop at your destination, you’ll likely face last-minute lines, higher prices and limited availability.

    Shopping online lets you avoid much of this hassle, and believe it or not retailers have adapted some pretty good green shipping ideas. Plus, if your flight gets grounded because of snow, little Timmy will still get to open that bicycle on Christmas morning.
