EasyJet predicts winter air travel will fall

Easy Jet is predicting that airlines will see a fall in demand of between two and four per cent this winter.

The low-cost carrier said it expects its annual pre-tax profit to fall by ten per cent to £110 million as a consequence of the gloomy outlook.

Strong growth in total revenue per seat that had been witnessed over the summer will reportedly tail off due to the economic downturn.

The carrier’s stock has lost more than 40 per cent of its value so far this year and had already committed to reining in some services in order to cope with heightened operating costs.

Those difficulties have been marginally offset by the recent fall in oil prices - down from a July peak of $147 to just $95 per barrel - but analysts insist the situation remains volatile.

Numis Securities wrote a research note warning that easyJet’s prediction may be understating the problem.

Assessing the industry situation in general, it voiced concern about the winter trading outlook “as pressures on the consumer accumulate and the outlook for employment in the UK deteriorates”.

Earlier this week, BA chief executive Willie Walsh warned the airline industry is going through its worst-ever crisis.

Enjoy Your Gap Year With Travel Insurance

A Gap Year is a reverie for many. That precious year off between school and university, or increasingly these days the adult gap year - between one job and the next. Planning a gap year is provocative and thrilling - and little bit scary, all at the same time. The costs can add up, especially when you are looking at round the world airfares out of Australia, and European Contiki tours paid for by the Australian dollar.

One expense anyone planning a gap year should NOT scrimp on is tourism insurance.

Fortunately, there are specific long term travel insurance cover policies on tap. Here are some of the key features you should look for in insurance for your dream gap year:

    * online policy - dealing with real dossier is so last year! Easy to read documents anytime, day or night and an email contact can be so much easier!
    * greatest extent of policy – a travel policy should cover you for up to 12 months, and ideally you should be able to extend it while you are abroad
    * define “dangerous sport”. Travel insurance often doesn’t cover you for “unsafe” stuff like bungee jumping, white-water rafting, diving, horse riding – yes, justified about anything which is any fun at all! Make sure your travel insurance does!
    * high medical and hospital expense shelter - sure you’re not going to get sick - no one under 30 ever does right? Well actually no, wrong, but more to the point what happens if you get run over when you look the dishonor way before you cross the road? That could cost a second mortgage on your parents’ house just to get you home!
    * negative cash flow death of luggage - you aren’t going to be staying in the flashiest hotels, or even private rooms at times. Have you checked the bring in of all those electronic (and oh, so easily stolen) gadgets you plan to take: digital camera, laptop etc?

    * online minimize - you may be happy to say goodbye to study for a year - but make sure you shop around, especially online - there are some fantastic shabby student travel insurance deals out there! Just like the banks, the travel insurance industry wants YOU - or at least your expressly!

Although many young travelers plan to head off for their gap year without a care in the world, in fact, many more will need to line along the way. Working holiday schemes, SWAP programs and grandparents born in the UK are the gap year traveler’s best escort. A standard travel insurance policy may not cover you when you are waiting tables in a Greek taverna or pulling pints at a British pub. A solid gap year travel policy should cover you - so long as you are working legally.

Remember that all those carefully arranged plans you started with at domicile have a small chance of actually happening - gap year travel is all about spontaneity - planning to travel through China and ending up on a run aground in Goa, is just the sort of thing that happens! Your travel insurance needs to be just as flexible and cover you worldwide.

Oh and the one most grave reason you should get travel insurance for your gap year - your mother will be able to sleep at night!

    not you for the diet!

You don’t enjoy your reflection in a mirror any more? It’s impossible to hook up our favorite skirt? That means that time is come — the time for growing thin.

Being thin is not the same thing as being healthy. There is a wide variety of different diets, and comments to the majority of them guarantee you health, beauty and even good mood! Is all that really true?

In fact, to be healthy is one of the easiest things in the world. You need very little, except proper diet: supply your organism with the ?fuel? necessary at the moment. Remember, the diet is for you, not you for the diet! Leave all the ?junk food? behind — your organism can’t digest it to the end, and the remaining parts litter it. As result you get excess weight, hidden allergy and all the things connected with preceding ones. To the contrast, having had chosen a proper food you will make your immune system work in the most favourable way, helping all the collected trash out.

Do you suffer from constipations, acnes or hypostases? If you do, concern them to be the warning saying your inner ?sewerage system? is locked. You can react by starting a calorie count or by exclusion proteins or carbohydrates from your diet. It’s either common, but faulty practice: such a partly diet is not balanced at all, it makes organism to starve and conducts illness to the place unfettered by the fat. The only correct way is to separate the food you eat to the ?fuel? and the ?litter? and forget about the latter.

The problem of weight excess exists as many centuries as the mankind subsists. It seems to become the major disease of the present days. There is a great amount ways invented to solve it, but usually nobody thinks of health in chase of weight loss. Consequences of one only diets are well-known — the appearance of such problems as bad state of health or flabby skin. Furthermore, it’s a common think to put on the weight after having ?finished? the diet; someone becomes even fattier than before.

The main peculiarity of our method is an individual approach. One is made to put on the weight with bread, the other — with cottage cheese or tea. In the second place, you can eat any time you want, no only till 18.00 o’clock. Third, it is not necessary to count calories and grammes of the foodstuff eaten. Fourth, after you pass the blood test on latent food allergy, your food will not be monotonous and meat, fish, cereals, vegetables, fruit and nuts will always be present in your so-called ?green? list.

Therefore each patient who suffers from weight excess and grows thin in the Clinic becomes scrawnier and healthier at the same: the weight loss always goes along with arterial pressure lowering (if it was elevated) and blood sugar normalization. Joints pains become a thing of the past, headaches become rare at the beginning of the treatment and then completely disappear. Functions of a gut improve, the stool normalized, together with skin conditions.

Let your blood answer the question why you have put on weight and which products have promoted this process. To understand the reply in the best way you can call the doctor-dietician who will by sure make the treatment much more comfortable and easy.

    Sinusitis affects millions each year

Newburgh – We’ve all been there – runny nose, the pressure, sometimes a fever – and before you know it – the sinus infection – also known as acute sinusitis. And, if you’re like many sinusitis sufferers, you feel like you want to lop your head off!

You’re not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, sinusitis affects 37 million people each year, making it one of the most common health problems in the U.S. It’s more prevalent than heart disease and asthma and has a greater impact on quality of life than chronic back pain or congestive heart failure. Symptoms may even affect people physically, functionally, and emotionally.

Now, chronic sufferers of sinusitis can take comfort in knowing that there is a minimally invasive treatment available. Dr. Ran Rubinstein, a triple board-certified ENT specialist, was the first in the region to offer patients relief with a revolutionary procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty™.

Much like cardiologists use a balloon catheter to open a blocked artery, Balloon Sinuplasty uses a small, flexible, sinus balloon catheter that is placed into the nose to reach the sinuses. The sinus balloon catheter is gradually inflated to gently restructure the blocked nasal passage, without damaging sinus lining and restoring normal sinus drainage and function. There is minimal bleeding, and many patients have been able to return to normal activities within 24 hours. Clinical research has indicated that the Balloon Sinuplasty system is a safe and effective tool in dilating blocked sinuses.

“Anyone who suffers from chronic sinus infections knows how painful they can be and how disruptive they can be to daily functioning,” says Dr. Rubinstein of ENT, Allergy & Sinus Practice, located in Newburgh, NY. “The Balloon Sinuplasty procedure has been wonderfully beneficial for my patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. It’s safe and effective, minimally invasive and results in virtually no bleeding and faster recovery time,” Dr. Rubinstein continued. Balloon Sinuplasty is a same-day procedure and does not require a hospital stay.

“For years I suffered from chronic sinus infections,” said Christina Jefferson of Newburgh . “They were terribly painful and disrupted my life. Turning to Dr. Rubinstein for the Balloon Sinuplasty procedure really gave me my life back. I missed just a few days of work, and didn’t have any swelling, bruising, or that awful packing in my nose. The results have been phenomenal,” Christina continued.

To understand sinusitis, it is important to understand how sinuses work and the affect they have on our health. The sinuses are air spaces behind the bones of the upper face, between the eyes and behind the forehead, nose, and cheeks. The sinuses are covered with a mucus layer and cells that contain little hairs on their surfaces called cilia. These help trap and push out bacteria and pollutants. Each sinus has an opening that allows mucus to drain – this drainage is essential to keeping sinuses working well and a person healthy. Anything that obstructs that flow may cause a buildup of mucus in the sinuses, which can lead to an infection.

    Facts About Sinusitis:

    * Sinusitis affects approximately 14% of the adult U.S. population.

    * Sinusitis affects 17% of women and 10% of men each year.

    * Chronic sinusitis (not including acute sinusitis) results annually in an estimated 18-22 million physician office visits.

    * Direct healthcare expenditures due to sinusitis cost are over $8 billion each year.

    * Total restricted activity days due to sinusitis are over 73 million per year.

Fly Fishing - Choosing The Right Fly Fishing Rod

In approach of the wide research done in fly fishing the number of fly fishing rod types in the market are quite large and you have a great option and brand names. The first aspect you have to consider is the weight and duty for which you are purchasing the fishing rod. They are generally available in gradations from 1 to 9 depending on their mass. Lower the numbers lower the weight and so on. The cast line is directly proportional to the fly rod weight and this is an important parameter.

Valuable features of a Fly Fishing Rod

The topic of choosing the most appropriate fishing rod that you can use in fly fishing can be quite complicated and you fundamental to logically understand the various features that are to be considered in the course of your choice. It is imperative to have the basic date on what the fishing rod is being worn for in terms of the fish species and the waters where you will sport for those kinds of fish. Finally one needs to stipulate the amount merit spending for all this gear in order to satisfy one's craving for this sport.

    The Fishing Rod

The most important star of the fishing rod is its flexural characteristics. It is designated as slow to fast and you should try to understand this concept before purchasing a rod. The amateurs who have legitimate started fly fishing need to begin with medium or medium-fast action rods and graduate on to more polished construction as you gain more experience. It invariably depends on the aptitude of the angler and only a general guide line can be given since the the feeling and strength control of casting vary from person to person.

    What is your Fish?

The type of fish is all prominent to determine the quality of your fishing rod. Remember that the general maxim is to equate the weight of the fish to the weight of the fishing rod. Mostly it is expedient to use light to medium heavy fishing gear for many common fish. Always consult an expert or information on the Internet on the information pertaining to fish and fishing rod relationship.

Fishing Location and your Fishing Rod

The fishing rods depend also on the waters that you run-in for the particular species of fish. The dynamics of the ponds, lakes or rivers ascertain the weight of the casting rod and so does the climatic conditions at odd times of the year. Mild conditions and medium fish require light to medium heavy fishing rods whilst stormy climatic variations or high water current needs heavier varieties.

    Cost is always impressive!

Quality and cost never blend and one must find a good relationship by generalization technique. The common or let us say popular St. Croix Fly Fishing rod is unequivocally suitable for most of the angler's needs. If you have more to spend then go in for the more expensive rods that will give you additional features and efficiency. It is your passion for trout that will make up one's mind your attraction to a particular fly fishing rod!

Big Crowds Show Up For Spring Flowers

    By COSHANDRA DILLARD
    Staff Writer

Hundreds of Tylerites, tourists and even pets strolled along the city's brick streets and meticulously manicured lawns in the Azeala District on Saturday during the 50th Annual Azalea and Spring Flower Trail.

The mild weather was a perfect setting for the annual festival and the mood along several blocks was serene, despite the host of observers who were wowed by the lavish scenery. Along West Dobbs Street, there was the sound of music and the smell of chili simmering as teams of ardent chili chefs prepared their dishes for the annual cookoff.

Nearby, at Bergfeld Park, children bounced in gigantic playhouses or climbed a rock wall, while adults meandered through acres of arts and crafts goodies.

But of course the center of the festival — blossoming azaleas — took precedence. Visitors trekked across Texas and even the country to view the thousands of flowers that dotted homes along the trail. They marveled at the shades of fuchsia, purple, yellow and white blooms and were appreciative to the homeowners who opened up their gardens for all to enjoy.

This was the first time Barbara Savage, of Plano, visited Tyler during the Azalea Trail festivities. She came to meet with friends but admits she was pleasantly surprised by the annual event.

“It's a nice addition,” she said. “These gardens are done so beautifully that it makes you want to go home and do something.”

Former Tylerite Jean Taylor, now of Houston, returned to Tyler as she does each year for the event. Camera in tow, she snapped several photographs of the

blooms for her personal album, which she says she pulls out every so often to look at.

“It's just wonderful each year,” she said. “It's more organized and it gets better and better.”

Toni and John Raymond, with daughters Hannah, 6, and Rachel, 4, traveled from Austin for a family outing. Raymond said he liked the red, white and pink combinations for floral arrangements but most of all enjoyed the laid back temperament of East Texans.

“People here are so polite,” he said. He added about the Azalea Trail, “It's just so well run and beautiful. It's relaxing.”

Kim Jones, of Pinon, N. M., was also surprised by her first visit to the event. On a work-related assignment as an occupational therapist, she was invited to the trail by a friend and brought along her Pembroke Welsh Corgi, who also seemed to love the landscape.

She said she will return next year and bring her husband. She also would like to mimic the striking sites for her own home, but says she'll have to be creative.

“In New Mexico, it is very dry so it will be a challenge to figure out what to plant,” she said.

Sightseers were not the only fans of the annual festival. It was a joy for some special girls, the Azalea Belles, to be a part of the event, they said. Calley Waggonner, 14, and Kelsey LaFerney, 16, smiled, waved and greeted visitors as they approached the homes. Daintily sitting on a lawn on South College Avenue, they were outfitted in antebellum-styled gowns, complete with lace gloves, fans and umbrellas to shield the afternoon heat.

They both asserted that being a visual part of the Azalea Trail was a life-long dream and they enjoyed meeting new people.

“I've always wanted to be an Azalea Belle since I was little,” Ms. Waggonner said.

Ms. LaFerney added, “I wanted to help represent Tyler. I've always wanted to be a part of the Azalea Trail. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can share it with my children one day.”

The two ladies are among 30 belles who rotate during the event.

For 15 years, Guy and Joan Pyron, have lived in the Azalea District. The homeowners' sprawling lawn, with its bridges, benches, patio and canopy, attracted a steady stream of visitors.

Pyron estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 people visit the trail each year. He spends hours maintaining the backyard but he keeps the compliments and admiration of strangers in mind when exerting all of the effort.

“It makes it worthwhile,” he said. “We do it for the public. We feel like this is our way of giving back to Tyler. It's been good to us and we're happy to do this. It appeals to so many people and brings a lot of people into Tyler.”

The Pyrons and their two cocker spaniels greeted people who crossed in front of them before heading to the next garden. The most generous compliment he's heard was angelic.

“Someone said, ‘This must be what heaven is going to be like,'” he said. “It's gratifying.”

Just a few yards away, Bonny and Don Edmonds, also welcomed a flow of people who were impressed with the English-style home and lawn, which included a maze.

“It's so much fun that it's like throwing a big party,” Mrs. Edmonds said. “They are very appreciative that we open our yards to them.”

The gardens of the Edmonds and Pyrons, along with neighbor Margaret Davis, not only amaze the thousands of visitors that stroll through their backyards each year, but it caught the eye of a national magazine writer. Their homes will be featured in the April issue of Southern Living Magazine.

WORLD FOREX: Dollar, Yen Rally As Risk Aversion Dominates

    By Don Curren

    OF DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–The euro retreated while the dollar and the yen prospered Tuesday as risk aversion fueled by financial sector worries continued to dominate markets.

Stock markets in the U.S. and elsewhere were all down substantially Tuesday, dragging risk-sensitive currencies such as the euro and the British pound lower and bolstering the dollar and, in particular, the Japanese yen.

“You have yen rallying against the majors, you have dollar rallying against the majors,” said Kevin Chau, foreign exchange analyst at IDEAGlobal in New York.

The risk appetite in evidence last week has dissipated with the start of earnings season and in response to a report that the International Monetary Fund has increased its forecast for toxic debts accumulated by banks and insurers worldwide to $4 trillion.

The U.K. newspaper The Times reported the IMF may raise its forecast for U.S.-originated assets to $3.1 trillion from $2.2 trillion and Europe- and Asia-originated assets to $900 billion.

The risk aversion that surfaced Monday and lingered on Tuesday will likely remain the focus in the coming sessions in the absence of any first-tier economic data in the U.S., analysts said.

Investors will also be watching decision makers in Washington and elsewhere for new policy announcements that could affect the global economic recovery.

Analysts at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch said in a report that markets “will have to become policy wonks over the near term, discerning how effectively the new IMF funding and Fed programs are filtering through the rest of the global economy.”

Late Tuesday in New York, the euro was at $1.3271 from $1.3414 late Monday. The dollar was at Y100.43 from Y101.00, according to EBS. The euro was at Y133.40 from Y135.49. The U.K. pound was at $1.4736 from $1.4751, while the dollar was at CHF1.1425 from CHF1.1367.

Francoys Levert, managing director/head of foreign exchange sales for Canada at State Street Global Markets in Montreal, said profit taking on earlier gains was a factor in the recent reversal by the euro and that it's unlikely to be a sustained setback for the single currency.

“I think what we're going to see is probably people waiting and accumulating some long euro positions,” he said.

While investors are still safety conscious, there has been a reduction in risk aversion broadly in the last few weeks, he said.

In U.S. data Tuesday, a Federal Reserve report said outstanding consumer credit decreased at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.5%, or $7.5 billion, to $2.564 trillion.

In Europe, final official data Tuesday showed the record contraction in the euro-zone economy in the fourth quarter was even sharper than initially estimated. Gross domestic product contracted 1.6% on the quarter and 1.5% on the year in the final three months of 2008, the biggest contraction by both measures since records began in 1995, the European Union's Eurostat statistics agency said.

“Data out of euro-land was slightly negative overnight, but I would say that has taken a back seat to overall risk sentiment in this environment,” said Tyson Wright, senior senior foreign exchange trader at Custom House, a currency services firm in Victoria, British Columbia.

Wright said the British pound benefited marginally from news that U.K. manufacturing output declined 0.9% in February, compared with a revised 3.0% drop in January and the smallest monthly drop since August 2008. The market had been looking for a 1.5% drop.

That news prompted some buying of the pound against the euro, Wright said.

Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia on Tuesday cut interest rates a further one quarter of a percentage point to a 49-year low of 3.0%, saying the economy is contracting, but at a slower pace than other major economies.

The initial impact on the Australian dollar was positive, but the currency subsequently surrendered its gains against the U.S. dollar and ended lower at 71.24 cents U.S.

Five US Cities Where Real Estate Has Been Hardest Hit

The upside to this down furnish is that investors now have a plethora of investments to choose from. From sea to shining sea, you see For Sale signs popping up on front lawns everywhere. It is, most definitely, a purchaser's market and will be for some time to come.

The very best deals are typically in the markets that are hardest hit. If you want to grasp where to investigate for investments, you should check out the following five U.S. cities for the best real estate deals:

#1 - Detroit, MI - The bishopric hardest hit by the economy, Detroit, experienced 4.8 times the national average for foreclosures last year. Homes in this big apple start from as low as $1,400.00. No, that's not a typo. They literally start from as low as one-thousand four-hundred dollars. That's about $1.22 per square foot. It would charge you more to build one of these houses. So, how could you not invest in rental property in this city with prices this low? Detroit, however, is not known for its safety. No, on the adverse, it's actually the second most dangerous city in which to live in the whole U.S. of A. Regardless, you have to admit, that is some pretty tempting pricing on that Detroit actual estate. Keep in mind, you don't have to live there to invest, and there are property management companies that you can hire to manage the property for you.

#2 - Stockton, CA - This burg has 4.8% of its households in some form of foreclosure action. Homes in Stockton start from as low as $20,000, and rent for as low as $390 per month. That's a reputation low for even the Stockton area. Speaking of records, there a record number of homes being auctioned off in this area, too. It's unfathomable. Who would not fancy to invest in this area? Unfortunately, this city is not known for being safe, either. Stockton ranked number eight on the list of the most harmful metropolitan areas in which to live. There are some very good deals here, though, so you may want to pencil one of these auctions into your busy investing plan.

#3 - Las Vegas - No, it's not true. Au contraire, everything that happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas where a 4.2% foreclosure amount has been noted. This once very booming city that sprawled with new growth is now somewhat stigmatized. Due to exceptionally rapid growth, welcoming comfortable with values became over-inflated over such a short period of time that when the real estate crash abruptly occurred there, it hand many home owners holding the bag on homes that won't be worth their purchase price for years to come. In spite of this, there are still lots of satisfactory deals in this market. Home prices start from as low as $126,000. Las Vegas is also ranked fourth on the list of most rickety metropolitan cities.

#4 - Riverside-San Bernardino - California has been one of the states hit hardest by the down economy in regards to true estate. Average home prices still beat out the national average, but individual home prices have plummeted. Homes start as low as $25,000 in these markets, diary lows for both. San Bernardino is the twenty-fourth most dangerous city and eighth most dangerous metropolitan city, although, Riverside did not taking within the top cities for crime.

#5 - Sacramento - Ranked fifth in the list of best cities to buy real possessions is Sacramento. Midtown Sacramento, a.k.a. The Grid, has hip bistros and shops that cover the twenty-four square blocks at its center. Even this size of Sacramento holds exceptional real estate investment opportunities, including commercial properties. Expert in prices start at an incredible low of $15,000 in this market. This city did not fall within the top cities for crime.

Not Quite an American Sweep at the Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

    by Nancy Jaffer/For The Star-Ledger

    Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

    Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

LAS VEGAS — The dream of an American sweep at the last Rolex FEI World Cup Finals to be held in the U.S. for years fell short of reality Sunday, as even two perfect rounds over the fences couldn't enable McLain Ward to take the international indoor show jumping title.

Ward, the Olympic double gold medalist from New York, was not quite as fast as Germany's Meredith Michaels Beerbaum in the first leg of the competition at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday night, and that proved to be the difference that gave her a third World Cup title.

Like Ward, who rode Sapphire, Beerbaum and her 16-year-old equine partner, Shutterfly, were penalty-free in the two-round power jumping finale before a vocal crowd of 7,497. Beerbaum retained the two-penalty lead over Ward that she carried into the class, but the world's number-one ranked rider called her triumph “the hardest win I've ever had.”

Ward had worked on a plan since last year to be the first American show jumper since 1987 to earn the title. It could have been quite a coup if he emulated the achievement of his countryman, Steffen Peters, who took the Dressage World Cup honors Saturday night.

“I certainly would have liked to have won, but I'm proud of what my team, my horse and myself did,” said Ward. “We did the best we could, and 99 percent of the time, we would have won.”

The only other American to finish in the ribbons was Ward's 2004 and 2008 Olympic teammate, Beezie Madden, 12th on an up-and-coming mount, Danny Boy. Third place went to the Netherlands' Albert Zoer on Oki Doki, who stalked the leaders throughout the competition.

Since 2003, the Cup finals had been held every other year in Las Vegas, but because of the economy, the organizer withdrew bids for 2011 and 2013. It was announced after the show, however, that a bid will be put in for 2014.

    History of Travel & Tourism

2000 years Before Christ, in India and Mesopotamia

Travel for trade was an important feature since the beginning of civilisation. The port at Lothal was an important centre of trade between the Indus valley civilisation and the Sumerian civilisation.

    600 BC and thereafter

The earliest form of leisure tourism can be traced as far back as the Babylonian and Egyptian empires. A museum of historic antiquities was open to the public in Babylon. The Egyptians held many religious festivals that attracted the devout and many people who thronged to cities to see famous works of arts and buildings.

In India, as elsewhere, kings travelled for empire building. The Brahmins and the common people travelled for religious purposes. Thousands of Brahmins and the common folk thronged Sarnath and Sravasti to be greeted by the inscrutable smile of the Enlightened One- the Buddha.

    500 BC, the Greek civilisation

The Greek tourists travelled to sites of healing gods. The Greeks also enjoyed their religious festivals that increasingly became a pursuit of pleasure, and in particular, sport. Athens had become an important site for travellers visiting the major sights such as the Parthenon. Inns were established in large towns and seaports to provide for travellers’ needs. Courtesans were the principal entertainment offered.

This era also saw the birth of travel writing. Herodotus was the worlds’ first travel writer. Guidebooks also made their appearance in the fourth century covering destinations such as Athens, Sparta and Troy. Advertisements in the way of signs directing people to inns are also known in this period.

    The Roman Empire

With no foreign borders between England and Syria, and with safe seas from piracy due to Roman patrols, the conditions favouring travel had arrived. First class roads coupled with staging inns (precursors of modern motels) promoted the growth of travel. Romans travelled to Sicily, Greece, Rhodes, Troy and Egypt. From 300 AD travel to the Holy Land also became very popular. The Romans introduced their guidebooks (itineraria), listing hotels with symbols to identify quality.

Second homes were built by the rich near Rome, occupied primarily during springtime social season. The most fashionable resorts were found around Bay of Naples. Naples attracted the retired and the intellectuals, Cumae attracted the fashionable while Baiae attracted the down market tourist, becoming noted for its rowdiness, drunkenness and all- night singing.

Travel and Tourism were to never attain a similar status until the modern times.

    In the Middle Ages

Travel became difficult and dangerous as people travelled for business or for a sense of obligation and duty.

Adventurers sought fame and fortune through travel. The Europeans tried to discover a sea route to India for trade purposes and in this fashion discovered America and explored parts of Africa. Strolling players and minstrels made their living by performing as they travelled. Missionaries, saints, etc. travelled to spread the sacred word.

Leisure travel in India was introduced by the Mughals. The Mughal kings built luxurious palaces and enchanting gardens at places of natural and scenic beauty (for example Jehangir travelled to Kashmir drawn by its beauty.

Travel for empire building and pilgrimage was a regular feature.

    The Grand Tour

From the early seventeenth century, a new form of tourism was developed as a direct outcome of the Renaissance. Under the reign of Elizabeth 1, young men seeking positions at court were encouraged to travel to continent to finish their education. Later, it became customary for education of gentleman to be completed by a ‘Grand Tour’ accompanied by a tutor and lasting for three or more years. While ostensibly educational, the pleasure seeking men travelled to enjoy life and culture of Paris, Venice or Florence. By the end of eighteenth century, the custom had become institutionalised in the gentry. Gradually pleasure travel displaced educational travel. The advent of Napoleonic wars inhibited travel for around 30 years and led to the decline of the custom of the Grand Tour.

    The development of the spas

The spas grew in popularity in the seventeenth century in Britain and a little later in the European Continent as awareness about the therapeutic qualities of mineral water increased. Taking the cure in the spa rapidly acquired the nature of a status symbol. The resorts changed in character as pleasure became the motivation of visits. They became an important centre of social life for the high society.

In the nineteenth century they were gradually replaced by the seaside resort.

The sun, sand and sea resorts

The sea water became associated with health benefits. The earliest visitors therefore drank it and did not bathe in it. By the early eighteenth century, small fishing resorts sprung up in England for visitors who drank and immersed themselves in sea water. With the overcrowding of inland spas, the new sea side resorts grew in popularity. The introduction of steamboat services in 19th century introduced more resorts in the circuit. The seaside resort gradually became a social meeting point

Role of the industrial revolution in promoting travel in the west

The rapid urbanisation due to industrialisation led to mass immigration in cities. These people were lured into travel to escape their environment to places of natural beauty, often to the countryside they had come from change of routine from a physically and psychologically stressful jobs to a leisurely pace in countryside.

Highlights of travel in the nineteenth century

    ·        Advent of railway initially catalysed business travel and later leisure travel. Gradually special trains were chartered to only take leisure travel to their destinations.

    ·        Package tours organised by entrepreneurs such as Thomas Cook.

    ·        The European countries indulged in a lot of business travel often to their colonies to buy raw material and sell finished goods.

    ·        The invention of photography acted as a status-enhancing tool and promoted overseas travel.

    ·        The formation of first hotel chains; pioneered by the railway companies who established great railway terminus hotels.

    ·        Seaside resorts began to develop different images as for day-trippers, elite, for gambling.

    ·        Other types of destinations-ski resorts, hill stations, mountaineering spots etc.

    ·        The technological development in steamships promoted travel between North America and Europe.

    ·        The Suez Canal opened direct sea routes to India and the Far East.

    ·        The cult of the guidebook followed the development of photography.

    Tourism in the Twentieth Century

The First World War gave first hand experience of countries and aroused a sense of curiosity about international travel among less well off sector for the first time. The large scale of migration to the US meant a lot of travel across the Atlantic. Private motoring began to encourage domestic travel in Europe and the west.  The sea side resort became annual family holiday destination in Britain and increased in popularity in other countries of the west. Hotels proliferated in these destinations.

The birth of air travel and after

The wars increased interest in international travel. This interest was given the shape of mass tourism by the aviation industry. The surplus of aircrafts and growth of private airlines aided the expansion of air travel. The aircraft had become comfortable, faster and steadily cheaper for overseas travel. With the introduction of Boeing 707 jet in 1958, the age of air travel for the masses had arrived. The beginning of chartered flights boosted the package tour market and led to the establishment of organised mass tourism. The Boeing 747, a 400 seat craft, brought the cost of travel down sharply. The seaside resorts in the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Caribbean were the initial hot spots of mass tourism.

A corresponding growth in hotel industry led to the establishment of world-wide chains. Tourism also began to diversify as people began to flock alternative destinations in the 70s. Nepal and India received a throng of tourists lured by Hare Krishna movement and transcendental meditation. The beginning of individual travel in a significant volume only occurred in the 80s. Air travel also led to a continuous growth in business travel especially with the emergence of the MNCs.
