Since this was to be our 5th year we decided to try a new venue. After careful review of a number of alternate locations we arrived at Scottsdale, Arizona as this years golf destination. It turned out to be an excellent choice and we reserved our time there from March 18th to the 22nd. We were hoping for reasonable weather as the week before we arrived the temperatures were in the high 70's, which is perfect for golf. When we arrived the temperature rose into the high 80's and low 90's, which is hot but still playable. It is a drier climate so the heat was not as formidable as in the north or southeast where the humidity will make it feel much warmer than it is. The courses we played were TPC of Scottsdale, Las Sendas, Gold Canyon - Dinosaur, Whirlwind - Devil's Claw and and We-Ko-Pa - Cholla, my personal favorite. The rates at that time of the year were a little pricey but well worth the cost in the long run. The last three golf resorts had 36 holes each and we were able to replay another 18 holes on their alternate course, which was most enjoyable and convenient. I have played desert golf previously in Las Vegas in 2002, as I vacationed there with my significant other that year to celebrate my 50th birthday, but this was different. The red rock mountains and varied rock and cactus formations and shapes, respectively, were incredible. The green fairway grass against the colorful mountain backdrops were breathtaking and I enjoyed every minute of the trip. We stayed at the Xona Resort Suites, which was centrally located and had excellent accommodations for a reasonable price. The elevation changes on Gold Canyon's Dinosaur course were the most incredible and the views from some of the higher altitudes were magnificent. After golf each day the restaurant and night life scene was hopping. We enjoyed Maggio's family style restaurant, which offered so many pasta, fish and meat specialties that it was hard to choose and at all you can eat prices. We also enjoyed Capital Grill another one of my favorites there. The only downside to this trip was the time of the flight from Newark, N.J. which was over five hours and I was seated against the fuselage with no window. I always request a window seat when I travel because I enjoy taking pictures of the aerial views of the mountains, lakes, canyons, river, the beautiful sunrise, sunsets and sometimes even the cloud formations so this seating arrangement was claustraphobic to say the least. We normally go with a group of eight golfers, but this trip one of my good friends, Ferd, decided to invite a few acquaintances from San Francisco, Chris, Frank, and Dave. We also asked another associate from Philadelphia area, Richard, to join us and round out the third foursome. There was some interesting golf banter and comraderie between the new invitees and the former two groups of foursomes. Everyone got along great and the golf, good food and good times was par for the course. As terrific a time that was had by all I will still opt for Myrtle Beach as my first choice of golf venues but Scottsdale, Arizona is definitely a close second. If you are planning a golf trip or vacation, you cannot go wrong with either location. The amount of choices for excellent golf and accommodations at either venue is unlimited and include many options for after hours entertainment. For more information you can check on line at either myrtlebeachgolf.com or scottsdalegolf.com to find some information to help you start planning your golf trip. The woman asserts that the unique possible reason of it is water in the general pool where they bathed. Similar claims did not see neither Poland, nor Egypt. Nevertheless Magdalena Kvjatkovska which is representing itself as plaintiff, intends to achieve from the Egyptian party of indemnification. The citizen of Poland it is convinced that the girl has casually picked up "ownerless" semen in "splash pool" – the general pool where all bathe having a rest. Such version of "interesting position" girls is put forward by persevering mother. She insists that the daughter never met young men, therefore to "pick up" pregnancy to it absolutely there was no place. The Polish service on supervision of tourist activity and representatives of the tour agency serving mother and the daughter, have already confirmed the fact of giving of the statement of claim in court. "She intends to go to the last with the claim", - confirms a source from the Polish tour agency. In the meantime the reasons of pregnancy of the minor girl can be much more prosy. According to the Department of Financial Services, Sink this week notified three travel agencies to stop selling insurance on behalf of Colorado-based Prime Travel Protection Services Inc. and any other unlicensed travel insurer. Prime Travel Protection Services Inc., run by Jerry Watson in Colorado, reportedly filed bankruptcy in January. Sink issued legal notices to Palm Coast Travel of Lake Worth; Vacation Superstore Network Inc., DBA Best Price Cruises, of Port St. Lucie; and Legendary Journeys Inc. of Sarasota, charging they violated state law by selling insurance for Prime Travel, which is not licensed in Florida to sell insurance. The travel agencies have 21 days from the receipt of the notice to respond. Reached by phone in Sarasota on Friday, Legendary Journeys Vice President Al Ferguson said his company hasn't sold Prime Travel Protection policies in six months. “We were getting complaints regarding their repayment schedule for valid claims,” Ferguson said. State regulators were informed, Ferguson said. Legendary Journeys has offices throughout Southwest Florida, including one in Fort Myers. Sink's office said other travel agencies are under investigation, and may be named for selling policies from insurers that aren't state-licensed. Travel insurance can protect consumers against costs from unforeseeable circumstances, including trip cancellation, early return and emergency medical needs. Sink advises consumers to get confirmation that the insurer providing travel insurance protection is licensed by the State of Florida (Office of Insurance Regulation) before purchasing the product. This time, the theme in question is Fresh News' big brother – Busy Bee.
The two websites that will be squaring off against each other this week is the money-making blog – IncomeDiary – versus the totally inspired, personal blog of Sarah Stanley. A quick look at the two sites makes you realize this is gonna be another close-knit affair, so let's jump into our analysis right away... Girls up first... Sarah Stanley Inspired – Link (Meghan McCrae from Clever Daisies)Starting with the homepage of Sarah's site, you'll notice that the only section that you can really see the Busy Bee influence is in the sidebar; the rest of the site sports an awesome design consistent with the brand identity of the site. One thing that is certain, is that the bright & vibrant blues & greens definitely feels inspiring, so kudo's goes to the designer for implementing a colour scheme that reinforces the inspirational content. Further to this, we really love how the consistency in the design and the prominence of Sarah's own personality (in terms of the extensive usage of photos featuring herself) has been used throughout the site, to really great a personal brand and online presence. For a personal blog, this is probably the most important thing, since there are just so many competing web properties out there; you thus really have to stand out from the crowd and we believe that Sarah has done this well. Scrolling to the bottom, we probably reach our favourite single design element on the whole website: the footer. The design in the footer is just simply magical, as it combines extremely well-executed typography which forms a nice combo with the playful swirls in the background. So many footer designs are so lacking and considering this is the last thing your readers see, we're always surprised that designers don't pay more attention to it... Again though, Sarah Stanley scores massive points in our book on this front. Income Diary – Link (Micheal Dunlop from Income Diary)Similarly to Sarah's website, Income Diary features a homepage which is almost unrecognizable from the default Busy Bee theme; the only element which still incorporates the Busy Bee default style is the homepage... And again, we're in love with the extent of the modifications on the homepage, which turns it into much more a fully-fledged CMS (compared to a blog). In terms of the aims of the homepage (we're assuming a little here), we think Income Diary has gotten everything just right. The great design of the separate elements definitely emphasizes the right things in such a way as to get the best conversions. In this regard, you can see that the author – Micheal Dunlop – has some great ideas on making money from Income Diary and the fact that he is combined strategy & design gives the website a massive advantage over others. Onto the inner pages, you'll note that they've retained much more of the default Busy Bee styling. But one thing that still stands out, is the awesome sidebar on those pages. A few custom graphics and custom widgets, really takes those pages from being average to being much, much cooler. Without that sidebar, we might not have even featured Income Diary here... Our final thoughts? Income Diary definitely has the more impressive homepage, but Sarah Stanley Inspired in turn hits hard with her much-customized inner pages. So again, we haven't made it easy for you by featuring two designs that are great for totally different reasons. You'll thus have to have the final say in this week's voting... WINNER! You'll see from the above voting poll widget, that the inspirational Sarah Stanley has won this week's Showdown with two-thirds of the votes. Congrats thus goes to Sarah & Meghan McCrae (who designed / developed the website) for an awesome website. Thanks also to everyone who voted and made this week's Showdown the most-voted Showdown thus far! Without you guys (and girls) voting & leaving comments, the Showdown just wouldn't be as much fun... Until next week... The difference between wines are often quite nuanced. Even if you think about a movie or a book you read - the human brain will only remember parts of it, and not the whole thing. That's just the way we're put together. As such, it would be impossible to have a memory capable of storing every subtle taste and flavour we experience in a glass of wine. At 4 o’clock in the afternoon, with a pale sun shining weakly through an overcast sky, a friend and I followed a trail on horseback through dunes and wetlands leading to the coast. A long-billed Hadeda ibis and a pair of Egyptian geese waded in a freshwater stream swollen with recent rains. The horses broke into a trot, then a canter, as we hit the beach speckled with gnarled driftwood and great, squiggly strands of kelp. In the distance, a near-perpendicular cliff face soared high above the sea, its striated green flank cut by the fabled Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most heart-stopping stretches of asphalt. The air was thick with seagulls, cormorants and black oystercatchers. We watched a huge seagull soar high in the air, a clam in its beak, and drop its prize on the sand; two dozen attempts later, it succeeded in breaking open the shell, and ripped into the clam’s flesh. Farther on, I caught sight of a dark form moving in the sand; it was an injured seal in its death throes. “They wash up all the time,” our guide, Hope Flex, told us. “Nothing can be done for them.” The creature wagged its flippers, lay still, then lifted its head and flopped down again. I turned my horse away and continued down the beach. There’s wildness to Cape Town — the big skies Part Alaska, part Big Sur, but always African, Cape Town can overwhelm a visitor with its grand-scale landscapes and its feeling of remoteness. It’s an agoraphobic’s nightmare, this patch of wind-whipped scrubland and mountain at the bottom of the world, and a naturalist’s dream. But there’s another side of Cape Town as well: the Dutch colonists who settled in the Constantia Valley 350 years ago were determined to tame nature, and they covered the fertile, sun-drenched basin with vineyards that still produce some of the world’s finest wines. Beach communities like Kalk Bay, reminiscent of Massachusetts — a funky mix of tidy Edgartown and rough-edged New Bedford — hug the coast. Then there’s the urban poverty that most tourists, and most white Capetonians, seldom see, except when they pass by it on the way to and from Cape Town International Airport: the squatter camps of the Cape Flats, where tens of thousands of immigrants from impoverished rural areas dwell in shacks beside canals overflowing with raw sewage, and makeshift bars, or shabeens, fill with the alcoholic and the unemployed. The city’s collisions of culture, class and geography can be both exhilarating and unsettling. What’s more, it’s all become very cheap to experience. The ouster of President Thabo Mbeki last September, along with continuing trouble in neighboring Zimbabwe and the worldwide economic crisis have pushed the South African rand to its lowest level in five years. The rate of exchange was 7 rand to the dollar when I left in March 2007; these days it’s around 10. Even though high South African inflation has pushed up prices in rand, they have declined in dollars. A night in a double superior room in the summer high season at the Constantia, a boutique hotel in the Constantia Valley, for example, has risen in the past year from 3,100 rand to 3,400 rand, but in dollars it has declined from about $400 to $345. It’s now possible to stay in a cheaper but still very good hotel room, rent a car, eat a couple of excellent meals and hike or mountain bike in the world’s most magnificent wilderness reserves, all for a total of $300 a day. For the budget-conscious outdoor-loving American traveler looking for a bargain in the recessionary era, Cape Town is hard to beat. I arrived in Cape Town in mid-November, at the start of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer, and decided to splurge for the first two nights of my stay at the Constantia, on Cape Town’s historic wine route. Elegantly furnished suites laid out around lawns and bamboo gardens, breakfast on a patio facing the rugged Steenberg Mountains, a private mini-swimming pool in the tiled courtyard outside every room — it was easy to feel guilty about such shameless self indulgence, but I was paying only the equivalent of $250 a night at a temporary discounted rate, so I didn’t dwell on it. The Constantia was a luxurious and well-situated base from which to rediscover the city. Permanent link to this post: in Cape Town, South Africa September 06 Working On Cruise Ships

Opinion is divided on what we can expect for 2009. Some property experts predict that the market will stabilize or even begin to recover whilst others less optimistically expect things will continue to decline further. For anyone involved in UK property from home owners to estate agents and mortgage lenders the future prospects of the housing market is clearly of great importance. In a recent survey major UK estate agents and lenders were asked to make predictions for property sales and valuations in 2009. The bad news for home owners is that there is little hope that house prices will recover over the next twelve months. On average it is expected that property values will drop a further 10-15 percent this year. None of the property experts questioned predicted a general increase in prices. For number of property sales predictions were a little more optimistic. Whilst some experts estimate that the number of house sales will fall others more confidently predict that sales will increase by as much as 10 percent. The above predictions represent the UK housing market as a whole. Of course the market is much more complex and diverse than this. Although the overall picture may not be great there are some sectors and locations where significant signs of recovery are expected. For example there is some confidence that the property market in London will ‘bottom out’ in 2009 and begin to recover by the end of the year. Similarly it is hoped that the number of first time buyers in the market will increase. The rising property prices of the last decade have left many first time buyers unable to afford to get a foothold on the property market. With prices now falling and a high number of people waiting to buy it is predicted that this sector of the housing market will contribute to a large part of sales in 2009. Overall although house prices and sales may not increase this year the general consensus from property experts is that 2009 will see the market stabilising. This stabilisation should then pave the way for a housing market recovery in 2010. This article is free for republishing Permanent link to this post: UK Property Market Prospects for 2009 |
